Unicycle Club: “The St. Nicholas Holy Rollers”
If you ride a unicycle, or would like to learn to, this club is for you! Membership is open to St. Nicholas Catholic School students, parish youth, and youth in the Gig Harbor community.
Led by school parent Frank Rainsberger, The Holy Rollers learn how to wow crowds with the arts of unicycling and juggling. The club meets every Thursday evening, year-round, except during Holy Week (the week prior to Easter) and the weeks between Thanksgiving and the New Year’s holiday. The club meets from 5:30-6:30 pm during the school year and from 7:00-8:30 pm during the summer. The Holy Rollers practice in the parish hall during bad weather or on the school basketball court on nice days.
School parent Todd Damish started our award-winning chess club in the fall of 2007. Since then, he has coached many St. Nicholas Catholic School students on the fine points of chess. Students in grades K-8 are welcome to join the club, where they will learn to play both traditional and “bug house” chess. The club meets twice each month, from October through May, in the parish hall. Check the school calendar for dates and times.
Students have the option of competing in several local tournaments throughout the year. Last year, three St. Nicholas students placed in tournaments! Their trophies are on display in the school office.
Little Flowers Girls’ Club is a fun, faith-filled program for Catholic girls based on Saints’ biographies, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and Scripture. Join us as we learn about 9 inspiring Catholic saints and virtues together through stories, crafts and themed treats! Little Flowers meets from 3:00-4:45 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month of the school year. All K-4th grade girls from the school and parish are welcome to attend.
Band and Choir
We offer extracurricular music activities to our students as well. We hold choir practice weekly after school. Our choir performs at Friday school Mass, occasional weekend Masses, special community events, such as the Blessing of the Fleet, and has even sung the National Anthem at the Tacoma Rainiers game!
St. Nicholas Catholic School participates in the Bellarmine Parochial Band Program. Band members from all Catholic Schools in Pierce County practice and perform together regularly. St. Nicholas students in grades 4-8 are welcome to join. Fourth and fifth grade students are eligible for Beginning Band. Advanced band is offered to students in grades 6-8. Contact the school office at 253.858.7632 for more information about our fantastic band program.
