A Letter from the Principal, February 22, 2010

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, ’”Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,

But your disciples do not fast?”  Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?  The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

           Mt 9:14-15

One of the obvious reasons parents send their children to parochial schools is to immerse their children in the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church.  As a school community we began our Lenten journey by celebrating last Friday at Mass with an All-School Liturgy presented by grades one and five.  Following Mass students and parishioners joined with Fr. Hung and processed to the school courtyard to witness the Burying of the Alleluia, a Church ceremony that originated in the Middle Ages to mark the beginning of Lent.   Friday afternoon we came together again to witness the Stations of the Cross for the first time in our Lenten season.

To lay the groundwork for Friday’s Lenten activities, students met in their school families as they customarily do prior to an All-School Liturgy to discuss the week’s Gospel reading (see above).  To begin each family meeting a question relating to the Gospel is discussed.  This month’s question is, “Why do we fast.”  Addressing this question in class and at home is a great way to engage students of all ages in a wider discussion of this Lenten season.  This is also a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our Catholic identity as a school community.

Should you wish for additional information on Church traditions, Gospel readings, the Church’s position on current issues, or essentially anything having to do with our Catholic faith, I highly recommend perusing the website of the Council of Catholic Bishops (http://usccb.org/).  Here you will find numerous topics to enliven family dinner conversation!
