St. Nicholas Catholic School maintains a strong tradition of school uniforms that reflect school pride, modesty, and appropriate regard for personal appearance. Uniforms allow us to see each student for the beautiful gift they are. By not focusing on outward appearance, we are better able to recognize the unique character, gifts, and talents that God has bestowed on each child, created in His image.

Every student is expected to be in uniform each day. The responsibility for supporting the dress code is shared among the school, students, and parents/guardians. A consistent, modest, and mission‐aligned dress standard helps create a learning environment free from distraction and grounded in respect for oneself and others. We appreciate your attention to, concern with, and responsibility for the manner in which your child dresses for learning.

Parents/guardians are expected to help children follow the school uniform rules. At St. Nicholas Catholic School, we wear uniforms in order to:

  • Focus on the individual gifts and beauty of each child.

  • Discourage income‐based differences that can create unnecessary peer pressure, allowing students to focus on learning.

  • Assure neatness, reinforcing dress standards that support readiness for school.

  • Promote an image of pride both at and away from school.

  • Represent our Catholic identity in a visible and unified way.

  • Support a positive climate of discipline and responsibility.

  • Provide cost‐effective clothing that is easy to maintain.

  • Promote moderation and modesty, consistent with our mission and values.

The uniform policy applies to appearance as well as attire. Uniforms must fit well, be clean, and be in good repair. Shirts are to be tucked in at all times.

*Failure to follow uniform policy may result in detention.

BOTTOMS

● Blue uniform pants (cotton twill only; no joggers or extra pockets)

● Jumpers

● Skirts and skorts (must reach just above the knee)

● Shorts (April 1-October 15; must reach just above the knee)

TOPS

● White or light blue polo shirts (long or short sleeve)

SWEATSHIRTS

● Grey crew neck sweatshirt with school logo (Grades PS-5 only)

● Grey 1⁄4‐zip sweatshirt with school logo (Grades 6–8 only)

● Grey 1⁄4‐zip sweatshirt with school logo and name on sleeve (8th grade only)

SPIRIT WEAR (WEDNESDAYS)

● Any top with a school logo may be worn with uniform bottoms on designated spirit days.

PE UNIFORM

● Navy athletic shorts (no shorter than 3” above the knee) or sweatpants (no leggings)

● Grey tee and sweatshirt (plain or with logo)

SOCKS/TIGHTS

● Blue, white, black, or gray socks (knee‐high or ankle)

● Blue, white, black, or gray tights

LEGGINGS

● Leggings may be worn only under skirts or jumpers.

● Colors permitted: blue, black, or gray.

● Must be fitted (no bootcut styles).

● Not permitted on Mass days.

● May not be worn as pants.

SHOES

● Shoes must be black, white, or brown only (no accent colors).

● Closed‐toe, closed‐heel styles required for safety.

BOOTS

● Boots may be worn outdoors only.

● Students must change into approved uniform shoes for classroom use and Mass.

HAIR & GROOMING

● Hairstyles must be neat, clean, and conducive to a quality learning environment, without drawing unnecessary attention.

● Hair color must be the student’s natural color—no dyes, bleaches, streaks, or tinted treatments.

● Boys and girls must keep hair out of their eyes.

● Boys’ hair must be cut above the eyes, above the collar, and above the ears.

● Boys must be clean‐shaven.

● Students may be sent home to correct extreme hairstyles or grooming concerns at the discretion of the principal.

MAKE‐UP & NAILS

● No make‐up of any kind: eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, tinted lip gloss or balm, lipstick, foundation, or powder.

● No fingernail polish or artificial nails.

● No perfume or cologne.

JEWELRY & ACCESSORIES

● Students may wear one cross or religious medal; no other necklaces are permitted.

● Students may wear a traditional watch (no smart watches); no other bracelets are allowed except medical alert bracelets.

● Girls may wear one set of post earrings, smaller than a dime; no hoops or dangling earrings.

● No other jewelry is permitted at school.

● Hair bows, ribbons, and barrettes in black, gray, navy, light blue, white, or blue plaid are allowed if not distracting.

● No oversized bows, sparkles, sequins, or decorative headbands.

● No tattoos, body art, or facial piercings.

FREE DRESS: Free dress is when students can choose their own outfit within the following guidelines and is allowed on special occasions throughout the school year as designated by the principal. Clothing must be appropriate for school – modest, non-distractive, and moderate. Not allowed: short shorts/skirts (must be fingertip length), halter tops, sleeveless or shoulder-baring tops, or cut-offs. All tops must be long enough to tuck into pants/skirts. Clothing must be clean and in good repair. Hair, make-up, and jewelry policies are in effect even on free dress days unless otherwise stipulated. The regular uniform shoe policy must be followed EXCEPT students may wear shoes and/or laces of any color on free dress days.

FIELD TRIP: Student dress code will be established by the teacher for all field trips. Field trip wear will be decided in consultation with teachers and administration and will depend on the circumstances surrounding the field trip. Weather and location will especially be taken into consideration.
